An open Letter to the Commissioner Timmermans

Where E uropean Commission Errs on Poland:

Article 7 and “The Timmermans Paradox” An open Letter to the Commissioner Timmermans

20/12/2017

Confronted by a real problem of corruption and breaches of rule of law on Malta you chose to remain silent, Mr. Commissioner, and did not choose to launch the treaty procedure. Were you motivated by the fact, that the government in question belongs to your political family, the Socialists?

On the other hand, you had no qualms about bringing the big guns against Poland, repeating, word for word the false allegations of the so - called Polish “total” opposition, defending the pathologies of the past governmen ts and the remnants of the communist regime.

This is what I call the “Timmermans’ paradox”. First, you remains silent about corruption within own political group, the Socialists.

Then, you attack those who, armed with a democratic mandate, fight corruptio n in the earnest and passing the reforms of the ill functioning the judiciary in Poland: unreformed since the communist times, never lustrated, ensnared by the tentacles of “Warsaw octopus”.

Finally, you stand together with those who seek to protect and pr eserve the pathologies of the Polish rotten judicial system.

This represents a warped hierarchy of values. It stems from a deep misunderstanding of what is going in Poland, where the sanation of an ill functioning state apparatus and the judiciary is fina lly taking place. What we see before our eyes is a completion of an unfinished Solidarity revolution, hindered for the last twenty - five years. It has nothing to do with a breach of the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
